Art History Movement Design

GRAPHIC DESIGN

UNIVERSITY OF HOUSTON - 2022

The goal of this project was to replicate a famous historical art design movement and create an album cover honoring the fundamental principles of the chosen movement. I chose Swiss Style, also known as International Typographic Style, which is a design movement renowned for its emphasis on objectivity, legibility, and cleanliness. Originating in the early 1900s, it emerged from a quest for clarity and universality in graphic design, influenced notably by the Bauhaus movement. This style prioritizes typography as a central design element, favors photography over illustrations, and employs grids and sans-serif text extensively.

Jacqueline Casey, a key figure in the Swiss Style, made significant contributions as a graphic designer, particularly known for her striking academic posters at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).Her work, characterized by bold typography and captivating imagery, effectively communicated messages while evoking feelings of completeness and restoration.

In a similar vein, Ben Rector's music resonates as"feel-good" and universally relatable, with themes of wholeness and completeness, notably expressed in his song "Brand New." Inspired by Rector's music and Casey's posters, the album cover design seeks to evoke sensations of restoration and wholeness. Through bold typography, strategic layout reminiscent of Casey's design principles, and subtle visual cues, the design aims to elicit the same sense of completeness experienced when encountering Rector's music or Casey's posters.
